The pertinence of social classes to the understanding of political behaviour has been questioned. The purpose of this article is to propose some directions for a geographical approach of political behaviour centred on social classes. More precisely, we intend here to show how geography can participate in this major debate about the present relevance of social classes. To achieve this objective, a geographical analysis must integrate two major socio-political evolutions since the 1970s: the re-composition processes of social classes and the role of parties in the decline of class voting. Drawing on examples in Belgium, the paper proposes original multi-scalar analyses that take these evolutions into account. At local scale, we highlight fractures inside intermediate classes, which are associated to the fact that left wing segments of these classes are more inclined to live in core cities. At national level, we show the deepness of class and regional gaps in political attitudes despite relative dealignment in electoral behaviour, resulting in the difficulties for big national parties to keep together such a heterogeneous electoral support. Finally, we show how big left wing national parties are able to overcome these difficulties when they are associated to strong and dense local social networks.  相似文献

The palaeontological content (charophytes and vertebrates) of organic-rich layers from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) of the Grands Causses at Mostuéjouls (Aveyron, France) has been examined. It is rich in gyrogonites of Porochara douzensis. The vertebrates of the lower layer include a single hybodontiform tooth, “semionotiform” teeth and scales, and one pycnodontiform tooth whereas the upper layer has yielded one hybodontiform tooth, a variety of actinopterygian remains (mostly Caturus sp. and indeterminate pycnodontiforms) and a few possible reptile remains. The variation in fauna between the two layers is ascribed to a different degree of marine influence.  相似文献

Tchabal Gangdaba (TG) volcanic massif, which is a part of the continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL), is dated between 34.4 and 25.1 Ma. It displays mafic lavas (picrobasalt and basanite, 41–43 wt % SiO2) and felsic lavas (rhyolite, 68–73 wt % SiO2). The lack of intermediate rocks evidences a pronounced Daly gap between 43 and 68 wt % SiO2, which corresponds to an important time span of 3.4 Ma. It is interpreted as due to extensive fractional crystallization under peculiar thermodynamical conditions. Patterns of change in the structure of bacterial communities monitored by ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA) in oil contaminated sediments inhabited or not by the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor were studied during 45 days under laboratory conditions. Results supported by principal component analysis showed a marked response of the bacterial communities to the oil contamination and to the presence of N. diversicolor. Phylogenetic affiliation of specific RISA bands showed that, in the contaminated sediments, the presence of the marine polychaetes favoured the development of bacteria which may play an active role in natural bioremediation processes of oil polluted environments.  相似文献

The Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo, hosts world-class cobalt deposits accounting for ~50% of the world reserves. They originated from sediment-hosted stratiform copper and cobalt sulfide deposits within Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks. Heterogenite, the main oxidized cobalt mineral, is concentrated as “cobalt caps” along the top of silicified dolomite inselbergs. The supergene cobalt enrichment process is part of a regional process of residual ore formation that also forms world-class “manganese cap” deposits in western Katanga, i.e., the “black earths” that are exploited by both industrial and artisanal mining. Here, we provide constraints on the genesis and the timing of these deposits. Ar–Ar analyses of oxidized Mn ore and in situ U–Pb SIMS measurements of heterogenite yield Mio–Pliocene ages. The Ar–Ar ages suggest a multi-phase process, starting in the Late Miocene (10–5 Ma), when the metal-rich substratum was exposed to the action of meteoric fluids, due to major regional uplift. Further oxidation took place in the Pliocene (3.7–2.3 Ma) and formed most of the observed deposits under humid conditions: Co- and Mn-caps on metal-rich substrata, and coeval Fe laterites on barren areas. These deposits formed prior to the regional shift toward more arid conditions in Central Africa. Arid conditions still prevailed during the Quaternary and resulted in erosion and valley incision, which dismantled the metal-bearing caps and led to ore accumulation in valleys and along foot slopes.  相似文献

: This paper analyzes concentration and velocity profiles measured in small irrigation canals in Pakistan. Theoretical profiles are developed and calibrated from field data. A procedure, applicable in any open channel, is proposed to make up complete profiles when only average values for the velocity and the concentration are known. These profiles are used to estimate the sediment load in the unsampled layer of depth-integrated samples. Generally, the correction is higher for shallow sections, but since the particle diameter is rather small, it is seldom more than 40%. Finally, a theoretical estimation of the bed load is made on the various sites comparing the Van Rijn and Bagnold formulae.  相似文献

Central Mindanao was the locus of a Pliocene (4–5 Ma old) arc–arc collision event followed by basaltic to dacitic magmatism starting at 2.3 Ma, representing the most voluminous volcanic field in the Philippines. Lava compositions range from calc-alkaline to shoshonitic. Adakites and Nb-enriched basalts are among the magmatic products. All the lavas are Na-rich (up to 4.88%), with Na2O/K2O ratios from 2.5 to 6.5. Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions are similar to MORB, except for some shoshonitic lavas that have slightly less radiogenic Nd ratios. K-enrichment in basalts can be related to both fractional crystallization (FC) at moderate pressures and to partial melting of an enriched source. Trace element systematics indicate that the sub-central Mindanao mantle is characterized by the presence of garnet, phlogopite, amphibole, and perhaps some titanate phase. The enrichment of this source is attributed to the interaction of slab-derived melts, i.e., adakites, with the arc mantle. This would explain the presence of Nb-enriched basalts, transitional adakites and high-magnesium andesites, as well as the bulk Na-enrichment and relatively unradiogenic character of the central Mindanao lavas. We envision an ion-exchange type of enrichment, in which the HFSE, LILE and LREE, mobilized during slab melting, are preferentially enriched in the metasomatized mantle, resulting in a diversity of post-collision magma compositions. The MORB-like isotopic signatures of the central Mindanao lavas preclude important contributions of slab-derived hydrous fluids, sediments, continental crust or an OIB-type contaminant. Slab melting after cessation of subduction is deemed possible by thermal rebound of previously depressed geotherms. Initial contributions to mantle enrichment in post-collision sites may thus come from slab melts. In most other cases of post-collision magmatism, however, this signature can be easily masked by enrichments coming from other sources, e.g., the continental lithosphere.  相似文献

The distribution of nitrification has been measured with the H14CO3 incorporation method in the Seine River and its estuary during summer conditions. The Seine River below Paris receives large amounts of ammonium through wastewater discharge. In the river itself, this ammonium is only slowly nitrified, while in the estuary nitrification is rapid and complete. We show that this contrasting behavior is related to the different hydrosedimentary conditions of the two systems, as nitrifying bacteria are associated with suspended particles. In the river, particles and their attached bacteria either rapidly settle or have a sestonic behavior. Because of the short residence times of the water masses, the slow growing nitrifying population has no time to develop sufficiently to nitrify the available ammonium. The estuary is characterized by strong tidal dynamics. Particles settle and are resuspended continuously with the strong current inversions of ebb and flood. As a result of these dynamics, particles and their attached nitrifying bacteria experience longer residence times in a temporary suspended state than the water masses themselves, providing to slow growing nitrifying bacteria the opportunity to develop a large population capable of nitrifying all the available ammonium.  相似文献

Summary The Cyclops massif (Irian Jaya - Western Indonesia) displays all components of an ophiolitic sequence including residual mantle peridotites (harzburgites and dunites), cumulate gabbros, dolerites, normal mid-oceanic ridge basalts (N-MORB) and minor amounts of boninitic lavas. This ophiolitic series tectonically overlies high temperature (HT)-high pressure (HP) mafic rocks metamorphosed during the Miocene.Mineral chemistry and bulk rock rare-earth element (REE) abundances of the peridotites are characteristic of highly residual mantle rocks. The high Cr# [Cr#=100*Cr/(Cr+Al)] of spinel (up to 60) and very low heavy rare-earth element (HREE) concentrations of peridotites (< 0.1 time the chondritic values) are in agreement with residues of 25 to 35% melting as expected for peridotites from supra-subduction zone environments. Ti-enrichments in spinels and secondary clinopyroxenes (up to 1%, and 0.5%, respectively) are likely a consequence of reaction between mantle-derived melts and the host peridotites. High light rare-earth element (LREE) concentrations reaching up to chondritic values and high field strength element (HFSE) anomalies suggest that the initial composition of the residual peridotites has been previously modified by the passage of boninitic melt(s). The associated basalts and related cumulate rocks display major and trace element contents with Nb-negative anomalies typical of back-arc magmas.New40K/40Ar isotopic ages obtained from the back-arc basin basalts (BABB - 29 Ma) and boninites (43 Ma) combined with the geochemical signatures of the rocks studied here, indicate that the Cyclops Mountains may have formed in a single suprasubduction environment. This implies southward plunging subduction of the Australian oceanic lithosphere beneath the northern part of the Australian margin. The ultramafic rocks and related lavas (boninites) likely formed during the Eocene in a forearc environment, before their southward obduction onto the island arc crustal welt during the early Miocene. The Pliocene back-thrusting event has led to the slicing of the backarc basin series onto the arc and fore-arc sequences.

Cette série, ophiolitique repose tectoniquement sur des roches mafiques métamorphisées à haute température au Miocene.
Résumé Les données pétrologiques et géochimiques montrent clairement que les péridotites ont un caractère fortement résiduel. Les fortes teneurs en Cr# [Cr#= 100*Cr/(Cr+Al)] du spinelle (> 60) associées aux très faibles concentrations en terres rares lourdes sur roche totale (<0.1 aux valeurs chondritiques) témoignent de fort taux de fusion (25 à 35%) que l'on rencontre habituellement dans les contextes de subduction. Les enrichissements importants en TiO2 des spinelles et clinopyroxènes secondaires des peridotites (> 1 % et 0.5%, respectivement) sent interprétés comme résultant de phénomènes d'imprégnations importants entre les péridotites et des liquides magmatiques. Les fortes concentrations en terres rares légères des péridotites (proches des valeurs chondritiques) associées aux fortes anomalies en Nb, Sr, Zr, et Hf suggerent que ces liquides étaient de nature boninitique. Les basaltes et les cumulats gabbroïques dérivent de la cristallisation de liquides tholéiitiques de type MORB. Leurs fortes anomalies en Nb, suggerènt cependant une origine dans un bassin arrière-arcDe nouvelles datations isotopiques40K40Ar obtenues sur les basaltes arrière-arch (29 Ma) et les boninites (43 Ma) montrent que le massif des Cyclops s' est probablement formé dans un contexte de zone de subduction impliquant une subduction vers le Sud de la lithosphere océanique australienne sous la marge nord australienne. Les péridotites et laves associées (boninites) se seraient formées à l'Eocène dans un bassin avant-arc, avant d'être obductées au Miocène sur l'are situé plus au sud. Les rétrochevauchements Pliocène ont conduit aux charriages tardifs du bassin arrière-arc sur l'arc et le bassin avant-arc.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and structure-from-motion photogrammetry enable detailed quantification of geomorphic change. However, rigorous precision-based change detection can be compromised by survey accuracy problems producing systematic topographic error (e.g. ‘doming’), with error magnitudes greatly exceeding precision estimates. Here, we assess survey sensitivity to systematic error, directly correcting topographic data so that error magnitudes align more closely with precision estimates. By simulating conventional grid-style photogrammetric aerial surveys, we quantify the underlying relationships between survey accuracy, camera model parameters, camera inclination, tie point matching precision and topographic relief, and demonstrate a relative insensitivity to image overlap. We show that a current doming-mitigation strategy of using a gently inclined (<15°) camera can reduce accuracy by promoting a previously unconsidered correlation between decentring camera lens distortion parameters and the radial terms known to be responsible for systematic topographic error. This issue is particularly relevant for the wide-angle cameras often integrated into current-generation, accessible UAV systems, frequently used in geomorphic research. Such systems usually perform on-board image pre-processing, including applying generic lens distortion corrections, that subsequently alter parameter interrelationships in photogrammetric processing (e.g. partially correcting radial distortion, which increases the relative importance of decentring distortion in output images). Surveys from two proglacial forefields (Arolla region, Switzerland) showed that results from lower-relief topography with a 10°-inclined camera developed vertical systematic doming errors > 0·3 m, representing accuracy issues an order of magnitude greater than precision-based error estimates. For higher-relief topography, and for nadir-imaging surveys of the lower-relief topography, systematic error was < 0·09 m. Modelling and subtracting the systematic error directly from the topographic data successfully reduced error magnitudes to values consistent with twice the estimated precision. Thus, topographic correction can provide a more robust approach to uncertainty-based detection of event-scale geomorphic change than designing surveys with small off-nadir camera inclinations and, furthermore, can substantially reduce ground control requirements. © 2020 The Authors.
